I appreciate the comments all around. However, I would like for you to consider something. Players like Allen bring an X factor to the game. A personality if you will. I have maintained from the get go that this team does not believe in Herms supposed plan. They were on the cusp of total defeat last year and Allen's stalwart play at least kept the defense in it mentally. As one very astute Patriot's fan mentioned on the radio yesterday; if not for Allen's sacks in his first two games after the suspension last year including the one in the S.D. game that Brackenridge returned for a TD, then this team may have went 2-14 or even Dolphin-esque and 1-15. I maintain that when your team is struggling for identity, when your fans are in full support of who is unarguably your best player last year, then you make an effort to play some ball with the guy. From what I have seen, the guy has given his ALL to this team for four years. Was last year his best so far? Undoubtedly. To make that seem as if it came out of nowhere is not quite right either. And no, I am not hammering Bod here. I am just saying that anyone with ANY sense at all could see what a great player this guy is. We didn't need the 15-1/2 sack season to get it. Truth to tell, I am happy for Jared. He is getting what he is worth/could get and has a chance to get deep into the playoffs in the weaker NFC. I simply maintain that this is another "Taiting" and that the management did all it could to derail any chance of long term negotiation. Here is another aspect that I think comes into play. CP just didn't like Allen. Because he and his agent took no guff from him. Then we start hearing about DUI's. The guy served his punishment and has kept his nose clean. Yet this came up over and over about his being an "at risk player" to quote the Sith Lord. Where was this consternation a few years ago when Mr. THREE dui Warfield was suspended for several games? Not one mention of "at risk" or anything else. He supported the guy when it was obvious he was not cutting it as a cornerback. Allen's play was LIGHTYEARS ahead of his. No, this boiled down to another Taiting and that's that. I truly wish Jared the absolute best in Minnesota. The BEST thing you did was get the hell out of this circus act in K.C. Just watch fellas. All these draft picks won't mean squat in the next few years when they are either A; a bust and out of the NFL or B; real deals like Allen who get traded away because the demand to be compensated for what they are worth. BTW, here is one more little factoid for those who try to diminish what having a sack monster at DE means. Last year the 1-4 sacks leading teams in the NFL went like this; 1; Giants, 2; Pats, 3 Seattle, 4 San Diego.  I think we know where  those teams ended up last year. Yeah, sure. Just keep telling yourself that a couple of extra picks are worth one of the BEST defensive ends in the league. Another BTW, is that all nfl players get paid for what they did last year. It is nothing new. Go Jared go.

Simply put, there were a LOT of hard feelings on both sides of this that we are not taking into account.

1) Allen was resentful that CP didn't offer him a long term deal, even though his behaviour off the field DID NOT dictate he deserved one.

2) CP and Co felt that Franchising him would hopefully appease him by placing him among the best paid DEs even though they still considered him a risk. They felt they had stuck with him through rough times and hoped he would repay that loyalty, which he did not.

3) Allen felt that he deserved a huge contract for his one year of performance, but failed to take into consideration his three years of delinquency and average play.

4) CP and Co. should have AT LEAST offered him a two or three year deal with an above average pay grade.

5) Jared Allen publicly expressed his desire to leave the team, which made CP and Co. feel any negotiating with him would be wasted effort.

All in all, I think both parties just wanted it to be over. Allen wanted to play for a contender and not be part of the rebuilding process. CP and Co. can now use the additional picks to speed the rebuilding period and perhaps save us an additional year of heartache. Let us all hope that next year we will all be saying how glad we are that our beloved Chiefs got Gholston or Long in the draft.

i wouldn't call allens last three seasons average. granted, last season he was a beast, but the previous seasons wasn't exactly chopped liver. think about it this way: the chiefs have 13 picks in this years draft. thats 13 chances for cp to pull another ryan sims or trezelle jenkins or matt blundin... i could go on, but you get the point. as for the trade, you lose a PROVEN talented defensive end, one of the best in the league, the kind of player that can change a game by himself to get what? three draft picks that MAY be used on talented players or as cp's past draft history suggests, we will get a bust or two out of those three. you trade away a definite yes for a possible maybe... not smart no matter how you look at it. as for the contract, if cp hadn't been such a prick, the chiefs most likely could've signed allen for less... as it was, he probably woudn't have signed no matter what the chiefs offered, which they didn't even make an offer, so thats where that fell. and herm's silence spoke volumes as to who is calling the shots at arrowhead.  one other pattern i'm starting to see thats really leaving a bad taste in my mouth is this: the royals were a very competitive ball club when kauffman was alive, after he passed, however, the ownership went on the cheap... which is what the chiefs are doing with their youth movement. young players take less money. thats if carl can get them to sign before the start of the season. now we need so many rookies to be able to start that i don't see the chiefs even winning 4 games this year...  Roll Eyes

You fail to mention the talent that CP has drafted. Every team has busts. EVERY team. What talented players have we pulled in the first round though?

Neil Smith? Derrick Thomas? Tony Gonzalez? John Tait? Larry Johnson? Dwayne Bowe?

I think his track record of first round picks is actually pretty good and I would take ANY of those players over Jared Allen.

Since CP has been there we have also drafted people like Percy Snow, Harvey Williams, Greg Hill, Victor Riley.  These guys are all picks that CP has drafted in the 1st round!  Yes eveyone will have bust but even if you look in the wikipedia about CP "is considered to be more focused on team revenue than he is about winning." ""King Carl" as the fans call him, is also well known for wasting draft picks ..."  You know when you GM is talking bad about our GM it is time for him to go.  He hasnt done nothing for us in all the years he has been there.  We havent won a playoff game since 1993..

I can agree in the fact I don't like CP. I think Herm may be the appropriate coach to help build the team, however I don't think he can take us anywhere. We can only hope CP follows through on his promise to retire, and Herm moves up to VP of Personel, which is a position I actually DO like him in. See if we can steal Al Saunders for HC.

Hi Bod. While I would like to be enthusiastic about Saunders, there isn't a chance. CP put the poker to this guy a long time ago because he wouldn't play his chump game. Like Allen, like Tait, and like a few others. You can only dis people for so long till it gets around the league but good that playing for a certain team is not a great idea. A lot of what is going on with old tight fist reminds me of the Royals. Try to spend no money and when you do get a great player, buy/sell/trade him for all he's worth. We have seen what that thinking did to the Royals. I wonder if we are in for a dose of it with the Chefs? Totally agree though that most of it centers around the Sith Lord.
